THOUGHT BUBBLE: Financial Literacy

Image
Take a seat! Let's talk about money! Haha, but in all seriousness, today I'll be discussing Nicole Kruse's article Money Matters. The article prompted my peers and me to debate the importance of Financial Literacy and whether it should be considered a required curriculum. 3 QUOTES THAT MADE MY COGS TURN   "But what does that look like and how can independent schools prepare students for tomorrow?"  As a former high school student who had the opportunity to take Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship classes. Depending on the instructor, the actual curriculum is fairly tame and simple to grasp. My financial literacy took a year to complete all of its lessons, whereas my entrepreneurship took a half year. Similarly to my high school, I strongly believe they should collaborate with colleges to provide college credits to students interested in business.                                    ...

Is Fast Food the New Tobacco?

Image
I do not believe that fast food is the new tobacco. It's difficult to remember a time when tobacco wasn't run by the government. Looking back, we can see that once tobacco became an addiction for the American people, the government stepped in. The same can be said for the rising fear of obesity rates caused by fast food restaurants. However, I believe that rather than imposing a tax on "unhealthy foods," the American people should have a say in what they put in their bodies. Does anyone remember the salad from McDonald's? That's fine if you don't because it didn't last long on the menu. The average consumer would much rather have the McRib, than your go-to salad. And that's their choice. Although, it is McDonald's fault for not advertising it as amazingly as their famous McRib.  As I was reading, Don't Blame The Eater , there was one particular quote that stood out to me.  "Whatever happened to personal responsibility?"  In ...

Is Pop Culture Good For You?

Image
To say that pop culture is everywhere is an understatement. Especially in an age where new technology is always being invented. Social media and television are prime examples of pop culture. This amount of freedom of the media can allow viewers to use it in numerous ways and intentions. Although some would argue that pop culture effects are negative, it actually positively impacts society. Social Media Frenzy In the article, Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted , the key word is participation, as it frequently emphasizes the importance of unity. In particular, the importance of strong social media connections during uprisings. Gladwell mentions in it that having weak ties is a wonderful thing in many ways. Neal Caren, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina who studies social movements in the United States, says he's never seen such high self-reports of protest participation for a single issue in such a short period of time (referring to the Black...

The Beginning: Literacy History

Image
Belle exclaimed, " Well, it's my favorite! Faraway places, daring sword fights, a prince in disguise..."  When people asked why I enjoy something as simple as reading a book, these words never rang truer to my little ears. It allowed me to go on adventures with Robin Hood! Laugh at the gregarious Emperor and his new outfit! And be whisked away with Cinderella to a ball where she will meet Prince Charming and live happily ever after.      That was a typical view of my weekend because I was frequently left alone while my grandmother cleaned other people's castles, and my mother drove the carriage that transported many princesses and princes from one event to another.         To  disconnect from the real world and enter another helped fill the void left by being alone at home.   I could escape into my own little world because I had storybooks. My parents separated, but one thing they agreed on was the value of my education. So, while m...
